Golden Mile Complex is often referred to as “Little Thailand” due to its vibrant Thai community and the plethora of Thai businesses it houses. This multicultural hub offers a rich tapestry of experiences, from authentic Thai cuisine to traditional goods, making it a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike
Thai Supermarket, with almost 40 years of experience, is moving from Golden Mile Complex to Aperia, bringing a taste of Little Thailand to the mall in Kallang.
Based on my analysis, it appears that the current supermarket will be temporarily closed starting from April 9. However, there are indications that it will resume operations in its new location by the end of April or early May. Renovations, which come with a hefty price tag, are already underway.
The sale results in the dismantling of Singapore’s Little Thailand, which is known for its vibrant Thai grocery and clothing shops, hair and nail salons, restaurants, and bars.
Thai Supermarket, established in 1987 by the five Loh brothers, has been at the heart of the action.
One individual, Mr Loh Yuen Seng, 59, has been involved in business at Golden Mile Complex since 1985, initially selling trousers in a tailor shop. Initially, he and his brothers served the needs of Thai workers from nearby construction sites, who frequented the complex for shopping and dining.
One of the restaurants in the building, Nana Thai, is set to open at Aperia, with another expected to join soon.
According to Mr. Loh, he explored other potential locations, but faced difficulties in finding a sufficiently large space. Eventually, Aperia came forward with an offer of 10,000 sq ft in the ground-floor atrium area. According to him, the mall is conveniently located just a short stroll away from both Lavender MRT station and Bendemeer station.
“Aperia’s convenient location near Golden Mile ensures that our customers can easily reach us without having to travel long distances,” he explains. “Additionally, there is a convenient bus stop located right in front.”
In addition to groceries, the new Thai Supermarket offers a wide range of products. There will be two mini-restaurants with seating, three food kiosks selling fried bananas and Thai desserts, among other things, and space for four small businesses, such as hair and nail salons. The final mix hasn’t been determined yet.
